Why am I a volunteer?

Driving on yet another Saturday morning for volunteer training, 36 miles one-way to South Chicago, one of the most dangerous places in the nation, I looked within myself to understand why I was doing this.

  1. I do not want to read of tragic deaths of children in the news (like AJ who died probably half hour away from where I live) and feel anguish, anger and helplessness, "Why doesn't God do something?".
  2. When I was a teenager, I wish I had someone who was a mentor or who guided me in the right way. Now the agency is just the "eyes and ears" of the court and not a mentor, but still, is a person who observes and makes recommendations in the best interests of the child.
